Betaloc is a selective β1 adrenergic receptor blocker used to treat hypertension, angina, and heart arrhythmias. The active ingredient in Betaloc capsules is Metoprolol Tartrate.
Betaloc primarily functions by blocking beta-adrenoreceptors in the heart and is utilized for managing hypertension, chest pain (angina), irregular heart rhythms, and for the treatment and prevention of myocardial infarction. It affects the autonomic nervous system, which increases heart rate by inhibiting its receptors, thereby reducing abnormally fast heart rhythms. Additionally, it lowers myocardial irritability, cardiac output, and produces various other effects.
Betaloc should be taken with food or immediately after a meal. Do not chew, crush, or split a tablet; instead, swallow it with a glass of water. The dosage depends on the condition being treated and may range from 100 to 450 mg per day. Your specific dosage should be determined by your doctor. Older patients are advised to start with a daily dose of 50 mg. Kidney failure does not necessitate a dosage adjustment, whereas liver failure requires the use of other beta-adrenoblockers that are not metabolized by the liver. Take the missed dose of Betaloc as soon as you recall it. If your next scheduled dose is less than 4 hours away, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not make up for a missed dose by taking an extra one. If you experience symptoms such as irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness or fainting, or bluish-colored fingernails, seek immediate medical attention.
While some individuals may develop a tolerance to Betaloc, common side effects may include abdominal cramps, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, depression, memory loss, fever, impotence, lightheadedness, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, cold extremities, sore throat, diarrhea, constipation, and shortness of breath or wheezing.
Store Betaloc between 15-30°C (59-86°F). Keep this medication away from moisture and sunlight in a tightly sealed, light-resistant container.
